From the Diary of Provence Rose:

“The truth is… quite the opposite. Mom and Step-Dad are continually oblivious to the extent that Patras has learned to manipulate them. Even from a young age… he’s always had an understanding of people far beyond his years. He knows how to get them to believe exactly what he wants them to…

…He knows how to make them break.”

From the Diary of Provence Rose:

“There is something wrong with Patras.

I knew from the moment he was born, that boy might as well be the devil himself. Even as an infant there was something just… off about him. Something not quite right. What kind of baby doesn’t cry?

It only got worse as he got older. He’s always been seen as “the good child,” quiet and obedient. Not like Athens. Athens who is loud and full of life… who always smiles, and jokes… and causes all the mischief you expect of a young boy. How is he supposed to compare to mother’s perfect angel?”

Later that Evening – Crossbones Cafe and Books

…and you never know who’s ghosts will come to haunt you.

Bonsai: I’m surprised you agreed to see me.

Clover: You didn’t make it sound like I had any other choice.

Bonsai: Can’t let my baby sister get married without at least meeting the guy first, can I?

Clover: Just please tell me that dad doesn’t know about any of this.

Bonsai: He doesn’t know. I promised, didn’t I? Still, I can’t believe it. After all these years, you’re finally tying that not. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I was surprised after what happened to…

Clover: [snaps] We don’t talk about that.

Bonsai: Does your boy know? The reason why you never let anyone close…

Clover: No. I don’t intend for him to find out.

Bonsai: Keeping secrets is a dangerous game, dear sister.

Clover: They’re not my skeletons that I’m guarding.

Bonsai: Be careful, Clover… The Macarons are–

Clover: Not my problem. They’re yours and dads. Keep me out of your mess, Bonsai. I don’t want anything to do with it.

Bonsai: …you know that’s not how this works.

Clover: Shhh, he’s coming. Please, we’ll talk about this later?

Bonsai: Suit yourself.

Generation One Fin

I can only hope it will last this time.

But the truth is… you never know. Everyone has the secrets…

Soliel: Oh hey, Provence. I was starting to think we weren’t going to run into you today.

Provence: Sorry, I’ve been on toddler duty all day.

Halloween: You’re alone now. Does that mean that you’ve been relieved of your duties?

Provence: Yeah, Clover has her for now.

Halloween: Good, then dance with me.

Provence: I think I’ll pass.

Halloween: I’m not going to take no for an answer.

Provence: Ugh. Fine. But just one. And hands stay above the hips.

Halloween: Gross. Like I would try anything anyways, Prov.

[they head to the dance floor]

Halloween: This isn’t so bad, is it?

Provence: I guess not… for dancing with a dweeb.

Halloween: Hey, this dweeb is your best friend, remember?

Provence: Don’t remind me.

Halloween: But really… how are you doing? I know that this can’t be easy for you.

Provence: …I’m “not supposed to know” anything, remember? But it’s hard… pretending to be okay with it. To know what happened… and act like I’m not wishing that it was my dad walking down the aisle instead. How am I supposed to be okay with all of this?

Halloween: You don’t have to be.

Provence: …I wish that was true, Hal.

Peanut Brittle Bay – 1 Year Later

It took us a while… but we finally got here.

Provence: Oh no you don’t, little one. No running off for you.

Eto: But, cake, Provy!

Provence: You’re going to have to wait until after the ceremony, just like the rest of us.

Eto: No fair!

Provence: The world isn’t fair little one.

Eto: Wat?

Sirius: [whispering against her hair] It wasn’t easy, you know? I’ve missed you, every second of every day.

Altair: Then stop pushing me away.

Sirius: You know this isn’t a good idea. My past doesn’t just… go away. What if something happens again?

Altair: It’s a risk I’m willing to take. Besides… I’ve never been the best at making good decisions anyway.

Altair: [quiet] I didn’t ask for it to happen, for any of this to turn out how it did. You have no idea how many nights I’ve spent thinking about. How I much I wish that I could go back and make it happen differently. I didn’t mean to hurt you.

Sirius: I know that…

Altair: Then why are you treating me like I asked for it to happen?

[long pause]

Sirius: Can we just, hit pause?

Altair: I feel like we’ve been on pause for years.

Sirius: [hugs her tightly] A little longer couldn’t hurt, could it?

A Few Weeks Later

[rain sounds]

Clover: Hey… Tair… you might want to take a look outside,

Altair: Huh? Don’t tell me that it’s starting to–[gasps]

[she takes off outside]

Altair: What are you doing here?

Sirius: I… have no idea.

Altair:…Two years of dodging phone calls and turning away my visits and you just, what? Think you can show up at my doorstep and expect everything to be okay?

Sirius: I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have ignored you.

Altair: No you shouldn’t have.

Sirius: Altair… do you really blame me though? How was I supposed to face you after that?

Altair: You could have at least tried.

Sirius: I shot you.

Altair: You didn’t mean to.

Sirius: You almost died in my arms.

Altair: [lays her head against his chest]
