Ume: What kind of a person would I be if I didn’t try to protect a person I love?

Altair: [freezes]

Ume: Even after twenty years, Altair, that hasn’t changed. I will protect you as long as I am able.

Altair: … [walks faster]

Ume: I’m not going to stop.

Altair: Excuse me?

Ume: Trying to protect you, I mean.

Altair: You should. I don’t need you to take care of me, Ume.

Ume: [chuckles] You never have. But I’m not doing it because I think you are incapable.

Altair: Enlighten me then. Why keep doing it?

Altair: You really didn’t have to ride the train home with me.

Ume: What? And let you take the train home all by yourself? It’s a dangerous world out there, Altair.

Altair: Cut it out already!

Ume: What?

Altair: This whole knight in shining armor bull shiitake you are doing. It’s been like this since we were kids. I don’t need you to protect me.

Ume: Are you always going to be this defensive?

Altair: Give me one reason why I shouldn’t be.

Ume: We use to be friends once. Remember that? Before all of this? Once upon a time, it was me and you against the world.

Altair: That was a lifetime ago. It’s not like we can just push restart and everything is suddenly okay.

Ume: Don’t you think I know that?

Altair: Then why can’t you let this go?

Ume: I just want you to at least give me the chance to make things right. Don’t I at least deserve that?
